Alternatives for Battered Women, located in Rochester, New York, is the newest organization The Bra Recyclers are extending support to. According to the Alternatives for Battered Women mission they exist to, “enhance the quality of life and empower individuals affected by or at risk of domestic violence”. As such, they offer a 38 bed emergency shelter for women and children (both boys and girls under 18), walk in counseling, family programs, transitional support services, a court advocacy program that provides assistance at the Hall of Justice, and education/prevention programs. They also offer a “Speaker’s Bureau” that hosts individualized presentation to community groups, professional and others about domestic violence.
Alternatives for Battered Women was founded over twenty five years ago by a group of concerned community members who made a vow that, “no one in danger of being abused in their own homes, by their own loved ones, should ever be alone and without refuge again”. Today, their promise to their community is a reality!
If you are in or near Rochester, join Alternatives for Battered Women for their Charity Arts & Crafts Auction, an event sponsored by medical students at the University of Rochester. The event will take place Friday, November 19, 2010.

We are excited to announce a partnership with Maggie's Place headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. They have five homes, 3 in the Phoenix area, 1 in Northern Idaho, and 1 in Cleveland, Ohio. The homes can serve between 6-9 women each and for the part are consistently full.
Maggie's Place is a community of homes that provide hospitality for pregnant women that are alone or on the streets. They have a two-fold strategy in assisting mothers to grow. First, Maggie's Place provides for the immediate physical and emotional needs of their guests including shelter, food, clothing, and a supportive community. As such, they are a family and a community! In addition, Maggie's Place connects the mothers to the appropriate agencies and resources including prenatal care, health insurance, low-cost housing, and education programs. In doing so, they are supporting the mother in both her short-term and long-term goals!
Kim Piehl, staff member at Maggie's House stated that 'women come to Maggie's Place without the basic necessities (clothing, food, support).' 'It is not uncommon for women to be in needs of bras, but at times we do not have the appropriate size. By being able to offer the mom's bras i the correct size, it will positively affect their dignity as women, confidence and comfort.'
Please visit Maggie's Place website to learn more about their organization and how you can assist them.
